Flexagon Fun

Create your own trihexaflexagon, a super cool oragami-like structure that will amaze you. To create a trihexaflexagon, follow these steps:

  1. Print a blank strip using this template.
  2. Cut along the outer edges of the strip.
  3. Write the numbers 1 through 9 on the front of the triangles as shown below.
    FRONT:
  4. Turn the strip over and write the letters a through i on the back of the triangles as shown below. Be sure to write 'a' on the back of triangle '1', etc.
    BACK:
  5. Color the triangles:
       Red:1, 6, 7, c, d, i
       Blue:2, 3, 8, 9, e, f
       Yellow:4, 5, a, b, g, h

    FRONT:

    BACK:

  6. Carefully fold both ways along all of the lines between the triangles. This is to "loosen up" your triflexahexagon for when you manipulate it later.
  7. Fold along the line between the blue triangles 2 and 3. Fold such that triangles 1 and 2 come forward and are folded "on top of" triangle 3 (so that triangles 2 and 3 "touch" one another). This results in the following:
AFTER FOLDING TRIANGLE 2 ON TOP OF TRIANGLE 3:
  8. Fold along the line between the blue triangles e and f. Fold such that triangles 6 through 9 go back and are folded "below" triangle 5 (so that triangles e and f "touch" one another). This results in the following:
AFTER FOLDING TRIANGLE e ON TOP OF TRIANGLE f:
  9. Fold along the line between the blue triangles 8 and 9. Fold by pushing the red triangle i down behind the yellow triangle h (so that triangles 8 and 9 "touch" one another).
  10. Tape the red triangle i to the red triangle 1 along the only edge that is common to both Be sure that no tape gets on any other triangle.
  11. Your trihexaflexagon is complete.
  12. Now, learn how to manipulate it. Have fun!
